Contraception & Emergency Care

Comprehensive options for contraception and emergency care, including daily birth control and post-intercourse prevention, tailored to your needs and lifestyle.

Contraception Options

Effective contraception plays a key role in sexual and reproductive health. At PairLife Clinic, we offer medically supervised options to help prevent unintended pregnancy, support regular menstrual cycles, and provide flexibility based on your sexual activity and preferences.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception is used after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy. It is not intended for routine use but serves as a backup when primary contraception was not used or was compromised.

Levonorgestrel-based pills
Most effective when taken within 72 hours after intercourse.

Ulipristal acetate
Can be effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse and may be more effective than levonorgestrel in some cases.

How Emergency Contraception Works

Emergency contraception mainly delays or inhibits ovulation and may also alter the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation.

Timing and Effectiveness

For levonorgestrel-based emergency contraception, the sooner it is taken after intercourse, the more effective it is — ideally within 72 hours. Ulipristal acetate may be effective up to 120 hours post-intercourse, but no method is 100% guaranteed.

Safety and Side Effects

Common side effects of emergency contraception may include nausea, fatigue, headache, dizziness, or changes in bleeding patterns. These symptoms are usually temporary. Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Choosing the Best Option

Choosing the right contraception or emergency option depends on your personal health, sexual activity, and risk tolerance. Our medical team will work with you to select the most appropriate and effective strategy for your needs.

Daily Oral Contraceptives

Daily oral contraceptives, also known as “the pill,” are taken once daily to prevent ovulation and reduce the risk of pregnancy. These medications contain low doses of hormones and are widely used due to their effectiveness and convenience.

How It Works

Daily contraceptives prevent pregnancy mainly by suppressing ovulation, altering cervical mucus to reduce sperm penetration, and modifying the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation.

Benefits

  • Highly effective when taken consistently
  • Can regulate menstrual cycles
  • May reduce menstrual cramps and acne symptoms

Considerations

Daily contraceptives may have side effects such as nausea, breast tenderness, or changes in mood. A medical consultation is recommended to determine the best option for you.

Follow-Up and Support

Regular follow-up can help monitor side effects, evaluate effectiveness, and adjust care as needed. You are encouraged to discuss any concerns or preferences with our clinician at any time.
